Two men have been arrested in the investigation into Saturday afternoon’s explosion in Male’s Sultan Park, Maldives Police have confirmed.
The explosion, which injured twelve tourists, took place at the entrance to the park, near the northern edge of the island at 2.36pm.
Some local media report the explosion was triggered by a home made device involving a mobile phone and washing machine motor attached to a gas cylinder. Witnesses report seeing nails scattered in the park, before the area was cleared by security personnel.
The two men, both Maldivian citizens, were arrested from the Saraasaa blacksmiths in the capital at around 11pm.
Police have cordoned off the area around the blacksmiths. Police sources are only saying the two men are suspects in the investigation into the explosion.
Suspects can be held for up to twenty-one days in the Maldives before being presented to a judge.
Tourism Minister Dr Shougee, speaking to Minivan News after the arrests, said: “it is not appropriate for us to prejudge guilt at this time. An attack on the tourism industry means that the livelihood of all Maldivians is at stake. We must find who is responsible and ensure nothing like this ever happens again.”
