Maldives
resorts to get 'stars' |
Minister of Tourism Hassan Sobir in an
interview with Afathis mentioned that Tourism
Ministry is seeking expert advice on star
categorisation from World Tourism Organisation
expert. Mr Sobir expects to receive a report
from the expert in a month’s time
and further actions will be taken based
on experts findings.
According to Mr Sobir at present there
is no international guideline to star categorise
resort islands.
Present star categorisation for Maldives
resorts are done by individual resorts or
tour operators. Different tour operators
sell the same resort under two different
star categories. This problem will be solved
if an official star categorisation is introduced
for Maldives resorts.
The World Tourism Organisation is interested
in star categorising the resorts and is
keen on implementing an international guideline.
The next step for a worldwide scheme will
depend on the outcome of the Maldives experience
of star categorisation of its resorts.
