The rough weather which the Maldives is
experiencing over the last few days has
resulted in various injuries to people and
destruction of property. Strong winds, heavy
rain and rough seas in the past few days
is reportedly due to a low pressure trough
in the southwest Bay of Bengal.
Two cruise boats which were moored in Hulhumale’
lagoon were swept onto the reef by high
waves and current. None of the passengers
or crew was injured in this incidence. The
vessels also escaped any damage.
A dhoni (boat) traveling from Villingili
to Male struck the inner breakwater of the
Male’ southwest harbour, shattering
the boat into pieces and it sank along with
the engine. No one was injured in this incidence.
Maldives Haveeru Daily newspaper reported
several incidences which occurred due to
rough weather. In one of these incidences
four islands of Addu, the southernmost atoll
experienced tidal waves, pulling off trees
and injuring one person.
Fishermen from most southern atolls were
unable to sail in the seas due to rough
weather. Most of their vessels had to be
anchored in the harbours of their islands.
Tourists who are travelling to Maldives
express concerns over the weather as they
do not like their dream holiday to be ruined
by rain and rough weather.
